Synopsis/History
“REACH”was born out of a desire to bring about a change at a central Pennsylvania high school. Created in February of 2008, we wanted to force students, teachers, administrators, and parents to face the issues that were being dealt with within the walls of a 21st Century high school. We wanted to show all people that there is an alternative to violence and hatred toward others. Above all, we wanted “REACH” to be relevant. Its creators understand that language and the way in which young people communicate will change. The play is broken down into several "vignettes" and monologues that portray the tumultuous and hidden lives of young people in and out of school. The names and genders of young people as well as the names of places can be modified to keep “REACH” an honest portrayal of life in any community.
Overall, REACH is about the human element of connection that needs to be fostered in all of us. The plot centers around the MARY; a young student who serves as the observer and guide through the other young people's lives. MARY and other characters tell their stories of disrespect, prejudice, inaction and action throughout the show. Their stories, although distinct to each character, intertwine and flow together seamlessly as MARY continues to notice that things aren't always as they seem. As the play progresses, a strong call to "stand up and REACH out to others" surfaces. The play's climax centers on what happens when people put their differences aside to reach out to and for help, and tragically when REACHing out does not happen. The one act play runs about 75 min in length, but can be streamlined to fit any necessary time frame.
In January of 2010, a full-length DVD was produced an filmed by Tango Productions at the Capitol Theatre in downtown York, PA. Six months later REACH: the DVD was filmed, scored, edited and boxed for viewing and distribution. You can find more information about the DVD and purchase a copy at www.reachthedvd.com.
